My MAC Art Classes

Just to show you what I'm up to at the moment, teaching Art Classes at Midland's Art Centre (mac), Birmingham.

This picture is of the Experimental Art Group who meet on a Friday morning at mac.

This term's theme is: 'Biography/Autobiography' or you could view it at 'Self-portrait/Portrait'. We've been looking at Sophie Ward Harrison's Messy Thrilling Life as Artist's reference. The idea is to build layers of expressive marks to describe your own story, This involves various media: paint, collage photography and text. If you think you this sort of Art might interest you and you want to sign up for the summer term - places are going fast, so I would say to do it pretty soon,

Moseley Festival Painting

This is a large painting in Acrylic on Canvas called 'Moseley Festival'. I took a series of photos and created a new composition. This is now being hung at the Old Moseley Arms pub in Tindal Street. I regularly attend the Music nights there on a Sunday and the painting suits the venue really well. It will be on show there for a year if you want to pop along and have some lovely beer and hear some brilliant live music.

This was exhibited at the Woodbridge Gallery at their Open Exhibition and was awarded 2nd prize. I sold it that weekend but miss it greatly, so this is a starting point for me to begin new work along similar lines.

I have done a lot of photoography of my personal spaces and environment - these spaces . This method of looking is my way in, to creating a new piece - then comes the drawing or watercolour, leading to an amalgamation of these images, into a new composition.

Graduate Shows 2011 School of Art Bournville

There is a Private View of Foundation and Degree work at Bournville School of Art,BIAD, BCU, at the  Bournville Village Green site. Take a look tonight at 6pm - 8pm, have a free glass of wine, see the shows and enjoy the Fashion Show, as well.

The Debate about Women Artists

On Radio 4 this Morning, they were discussing the fact that the Vorticist's Exhibition at Tate Britain, just opening 17th June 2011, includes Women Artists' work. The curators, evidently, made a particular effort to include Women Artists' work (Helen Saunders, Dorothy shakespear and Jessica Dismore) - admitting that although an abundance of  female contributors' work is stored in the archives, they would normally have gone straight to Bomberg, Epstein, etc.

There is a school of thought that, as in Sweden recently the curators deliberately showed purely Women Artist's work to demonstrate that there is plenty of material to fill an exhibition if the curators choose to exclude the male Artists.  There is also a school of thought that says that Art should be shown to represent the normal demographic of male/female percentages without stressing the bias -but just displaying fairly.

I would welcome your thoughts on the matter.

Value and Visibility Series #1

This is a large, charcoal drawing, measuring 5' x 10' based on domestic scenes and activities, focusing on 'Value and Visibility' linked with my MA work.
